MCT is the shortest time an airline will allow between two flights on a single booking. It is not the time you need — it is the time the system permits.

Your practical transfer time = MCT + walking distance + queue conditions + baggage situation + terminal change + zone crossing + booking protection. Some of these are structural (terminal change, zone crossing). Some are variable (queues, gate distance). Some are outside MCT entirely (separate tickets, baggage collection).

WHAT MCT DOES NOT INCLUDE

Gate Walking Distance

MCT assumes average walking distance. Your specific gates may be at opposite ends of the terminal. T1 piers A and Z are far apart — the walk alone can exceed 15 minutes.

Security Queue Variability

MCT assumes normal queue conditions. Peak hours, holiday periods, and operational disruptions can multiply security wait times. T3 transfers always include a security re-screen.

Passport Control Queues

Schengen border crossings involve passport control. EES (Entry/Exit System) processing for non-EU travellers can add minutes per person. Peak arrival banks multiply queue length.

Baggage Collection

If you must collect and re-check baggage, you will enter landside. Baggage claim wait time + re-check queue + security re-entry are not included in any MCT.

Separate Tickets

MCT applies only to protected single-booking connections. Separate tickets have no MCT — the airlines do not protect the connection at all. You need substantially more time.

Inbound Flight Delays

MCT assumes your arriving flight is on time. A 20-minute arrival delay consumes nearly half of a 45-minute MCT before you have even left the aircraft.

Boarding Gate Closure

MCT counts to the onward flight's scheduled departure — not to gate closure. Boarding typically closes 10-20 minutes before departure. Your real deadline is earlier than MCT suggests.

Reduced Mobility

MCT assumes an able-bodied passenger walking at average speed. Wheelchair assistance, mobility limitations, or travelling with young children add time that MCT does not account for.
